Synopsis:

This poetic assemblage follows a filmmaker couple on the island of Hormuz during the month of Muharram, whereby Shia Muslims undertake a prolonged period of mourning for the death of Imam Hossein, a religious figure who later became a source of inspiration for anti-colonial resistance by the Iranian Safavids. They trace various microhistories attributed to missing sailors and bring into focus the occult of Portuguese colonial myths related to the island’s legendary iron-rich edible red soil.

Synopsis :

Cet assemblage poétique suit un couple de cinéastes sur l’île de Hormuz pendant le mois de Muharram, période durant laquelle les musulmans chiites entreprennent un long deuil en mémoire de l’Imam Hossein, une figure religieuse devenue plus tard une source d’inspiration pour la résistance anticoloniale des Safavides Iraniens. Le couple retrace diverses micro histoires attribuées à des marins disparus et met en lumière l’occultisme entourant les mythes coloniaux portugais liés au légendaire sol rouge comestible et riche en fer de l’île.

Biography

Rouzbeh Akhbari (b. 1992, Tehran) is an artist and filmmaker working across a variety of media. His practice is research driven and usually exists at the intersections of fictocriticism, architecture and story-telling. Through a delicate examination of the violences and intimacies that occur at the boundaries of lived experience and constructed histories, Akhbari uncovers the minutiae of power that regiments the world around us. He was formerly trained as a sculptor and is currently a PhD student at University of Toronto’s school of Human Geography and Planning.

His films have been screened widely, namely at Docs Lisboa, Sharjah Film Platform, Ukranian International Experimental Film Festival, Moscow Experimental International Film Festival, Aesthetica, Istanbul Experimental Film Festival and the Internationale Kurzfilmtage Winterthur, where he won the Prix George for best international documentary form. His first feature drama, Threshold, premiered at Mostra (São Paulo International Film Festival) in October 2020.

Akhbari has exhibited solo and collaborative projects internationally at various venues including Si Shang Art Museum (Beijing), University of Toronto Art Museum, Tbilisi State Silk Museum, AMNUA Art Museum (Nanjing), Hay Art Centre (Yerevan), La Fabrique Culturelle des Anciens Les Abattoire (Casabalnca), Blackwood Gallery (Mississauga) and the Art Science Museum (Singapour). Akhbari is the author of a number of peer-reviewed articles in Projections (MIT journal of Urban Planning), Funambulist, Scapegoat Journal, Society + Space and C-Magazine. He has also authored three book chapters in “The Work of Wind” published by K-Verlag, “Unsettling Colonial Modernity: In Islamicate Contexts” published by Cambridge Scholars and “Shift” published by Sugar. His first long-format story titled “Prizes from Fairyland” was published in 2018 and his upcoming fictocritical novel, “Perturbation” will be released in the summer of 2021.

Rouzbeh Akhbari (né en 1992 à Téhéran) est un artiste et cinéaste œuvrant à travers divers médias. Sa pratique, fondée sur la recherche, se situe généralement à la croisée de la fictocritique, de l’architecture et de la narration. À travers un examen attentif des violences et des intimités qui se jouent aux frontières entre expérience vécue et histoires construites, Akhbari découvre les minuties du pouvoir qui régissent notre monde. Formé initialement à la sculpture, il poursuit actuellement un doctorat à l’École de géographie humaine et d’urbanisme de l’Université de Toronto.

Ses films ont été largement diffusés, notamment au Docs Lisboa, au Sharjah Film Platform, à l’Ukrainian International Experimental Film Festival, au Moscow Experimental International Film Festival, à Aesthetica, à l’Istanbul Experimental Film Festival et aux Internationale Kurzfilmtage Winterthur, où il a remporté le Prix George du meilleur documentaire international. Son premier long métrage de fiction, Threshold, a été présenté en première à la Mostra (Festival international du film de São Paulo) en octobre 2020.

Akhbari a exposé en solo ainsi qu’en collaboration à l’international, dans divers lieux tels que le Si Shang Art Museum (Pékin), le Art Museum de l’Université de Toronto, le Tbilisi State Silk Museum, le AMNUA Art Museum (Nankin), le Hay Art Centre (Érevan), La Fabrique Culturelle des Anciens Abattoirs (Casablanca), la Blackwood Gallery (Mississauga) et le ArtScience Museum (Singapour). Il est l’auteur de plusieurs articles évalués par des pairs dans Projections (revue MIT de géographie urbaine), Funambulist, Scapegoat Journal, Society + Space et C‑Magazine. Il a également rédigé trois chapitres dans les ouvrages The Work of Wind (publié par K‑Verlag), Unsettling Colonial Modernity: In Islamicate Contexts (publié par Cambridge Scholars) et Shift (publié par Sugar). Sa première histoire au long format intitulée Prizes from Fairyland a été publiée en 2018, et son roman fictocritique à paraître, Perturbation, sera publié à l’été 2021.
