The Fabulous Festival of Fringe Film would like to acknowledge the Traditional Territory of the Anishinabek Nation: The People of the Three Fires known as Ojibway, Odawa, and Pottawatomie Nations. We give thanks to the Chippewas of Saugeen, and the Chippewas of Nawash, now known as the Saugeen Ojibway Nation. We acknowledge them as the traditional keepers of this land and thank them for caring for this place as the stewarts of this territory which many of us call home. The festival encourages its members, artists and audiences to plan actions that support the health of the territory they inhabit, and to act with the wellbeing of inherently sovereign indigenous nations in mind.

Founded in 2002, the Fabulous Festival of Fringe Film was established by the Grey Zone Collective (GZC) as a way to bring contemporary and unconventional arts into the regional public realm. The GZC was established to collaborate with and showcase arts in rural settings, which are alternative, unconventional and exceptional. Current members include Phil Hoffman, Tony Massett, Julie René de Cotret, Cheyenne Sundance & Clayton Windatt.
Collectively these perspectives inform our current mandate:
To present and commission experimental, interdisciplinary and interventionist forms of time-based work in accessible settings. To give exposure to emerging artists while celebrating established cultural producers. To highlight our rural context that has always already been a location inhabited by diverse Indigenous peoples and a site of cross-cultural negotiation. To situate Indigenous people, persons of colour, Queer, young, disabled and otherwise marginalized peoples into the rural narrative as those belonging and not “Other” to rural Canada.

Emmalia Bortolon-Vettor is a guitarist and multidisciplinary researcher whose work involves live sound technology and improvisation. They have garnered varied arts experiences including live sound and theatre production, project coordination and management, curriculum design, developing and executing events, curating shows, along with marketing and communications management. Emmalia recently earned their MA in the IMPR program, involving the creation of a free recording and producing curriculum for Girls Rock Camp Guelph. Their current musical project is Bonnie Trash, whose debut album Malocchio was released in October of 2022 on Hand Drawn Dracula. If you don’t see them on stage, you can catch them in Guelph coordinating the Girls Rock Camp Guelph chapter, curating live music and theatre, or behind the board at a DIY show.
Elisa Glugosh is an interdisciplinary artist and a recent graduate of the Studio Art program at the University of Guelph. Using photography, painting and sculpture as a base medium, she explores curiosity of what is real and what is not, dreams and false memories. Inspired by surrealist ideas of creation, nature and sound.
Clara R. Windatt is a bilingual student currently studying Physical Health and Education at Nipissing University. Clara is also the Events Coordinator for the NUPHES council at her campus. Although she loves sports, she also loves films, and community activation through the arts. She’s been attending the Fabulous Festival of Fringe Film for years, with her father Clayton Windatt, the former Artistic Director. She’s got a passion for event coordination, and is eager to continue her work in the arts!
Julie René de Cotret, artist, curator, programmer, festival-maker, and occasional wrangler of impossible ideas. Their practice celebrates experimental media, environmental storytelling, and the joy of building creative communities. When not dreaming up the next art advocacy based adventure, Julie leads Ed Video Media Arts Centre and the Fabulous Festival of Fringe Film.

Emmalia Bortolon-Vettor est guitariste et chercheuse multidisciplinaire. Sa pratique interroge les technologies du son en direct et l’improvisation. Son parcours couvre la sonorisation et la production théâtrale, la coordination et la gestion de projets, l’élaboration de programmes pédagogiques, l’organisation d’événements, le commissariat d’expositions et de spectacles, ainsi que les communications et le marketing. Elle a récemment obtenu une maîtrise dans le programme IMPR, où elle a développé un programme gratuit de formation en enregistrement et en production musicale pour Girls Rock Camp Guelph. Son projet musical actuel, Bonnie Trash, a lancé son premier album Malocchio en octobre 2022 sous l’étiquette Hand Drawn Dracula. Lorsqu’elle n’est pas sur scène, on peut la croiser à Guelph où elle coordonne Girls Rock Camp Guelph, organise des événements musicaux et théâtraux, ou assure la sonorisation de spectacles DIY.

Bien qu’elle soit passionnée par le sport, elle affectionne tout autant le cinéma et la mobilisation des communautés par les arts. Clara fréquente le Fabulous Festival of Fringe Film depuis de nombreuses années aux côtés de son père, Clayton Windatt, ancien directeur artistique du festival. Passionnée par la coordination d’événements, elle est enthousiaste à l’idée de poursuivre son engagement dans le milieu des arts.
Julie René de Cotret est artiste, commissaire, programmatrice, créatrice de festivals et, à l’occasion, dompteuse d’idées impossibles. Sa pratique célèbre les médias expérimentaux, les récits environnementaux et le plaisir de bâtir des communautés créatives. Lorsqu’elle n’imagine pas sa prochaine aventure artistique ou initiative de défense des arts, Julie assure la direction générale et artistique d’Ed Video Media Arts Centre ainsi que la direction artistique du Fabulous Festival of Fringe Film.
