Offerings of Care

Programmed by distance between us

Bio

distance between us experiments with how we, as artists, find “new (possibilities of) normal” within real and digital environments. distance between us collectively brings together two households: the Windatts (Tara & Clayton Windatt) in Sturgeon Falls and ee portal (Elyse & Emilio Portal) in Sudbury. Working across two separate Northern Ontario locations, our ad hoc group mediates emotional and physical isolation through creatively reaching out to each other. We are digging out unrealized digital archives and documenting new intimacies with our home locations. We are humans living in a climate disaster reality and need creative exchanges. Exchanges between people extend to other-than-humans to provide a wider sense of community, which is key to well-being.

Description

Studio Projects’ 2023 summer pop-up performance series Offerings of Care are explorations of movement and messages while considering how environment and collective survival can be achieved. Performances by Tara & Clayton Windatt and Elyse & Emilio Portal will spontaneously occur during random times at la FAAS 2023 in the Donovan, Sudbury/Atikameksheng. Each work will respond to location, context of activation and will include movement, media and sound. All are welcome.

Statement

Artists work across boundaries when challenging the status quo. Boundaries of social discourse, relationships, geologies and the subtle expectations of conformity by peers. Making statements about the turbulence and dangers of our current existence is the responsibility of every generation as an act of preservation and survival. This responsibility is a challenge that is manifest through artistic intention, process, material, form and outcome. How does and how can the art work vitaly influence individual and societal behaviours?

As artists we struggle with a balance in life. We consider making messages through arts actions and how these arts actions may contribute negatively to our world’s problems. We also consider living in a basic and sustainable manner and how creating well-intended isolation will not make the world’s problems go away. We struggle balancing life and art as impulses lead us to making offerings to our world of care towards a healthy collective future.
