Ground is a contemplation on place, identity and time. The root of this work is focused on a collection of old photographs that were taken in the Atikameksheng (Sudbury) area over at least 50 years, and more recent video footage from Mnidoo Mnis (Manitoulin Island). The images are of Emilio’s family (past, present and future). This work poetically and fluidly investigates the collisions of his European, North and South American ancestry and how they coalesced on this land. It prods viewers to ponder questions like: how is identity created; what does it mean to be mixed; and what are the forces behind beauty, attraction and joy?
