Equal parts art project, history lesson, and whimsy, Celestial Queer: The Life, Work, and Wonder of James MacSwain offers a portrait of an artist who defied convention for a life lived on his own terms. Directors Eryn Foster and Sue Johnson spent a decade checking in with the witty, erudite MacSwain as he moved about his life in north end Halifax, returned to his tiny rural hometown of Amherst, Nova Scotia—where he grew up, unable to pass for straight, in the 1950s—and discussed his lifelong, wildly inventive art practice. The playful, queer work is cut out, glued together, and sung into intricate collages, analogue films combining handmade animation with documentary and provocative exhibitions. Johnson and Foster, who knew MacSwain for decades until his death in 2025, combine myriad formats in the production (including 16mm, Super-8, and digital video) for an intimate patchwork celebration reflective of their subject’s own body of work. Celestial Queer now stands as an elegy for a man who was defiantly original, internationally renowned, and an icon of artistic integrity. James MacSwain lived how he wanted—unabashed, uncompromising, and unforgettable.
Sue Johnson is a Toronto-based director in cinematographer working primarily in long-form narrative and documentary film. A member of both I.A.T.S.E. 667 and the Canadian Society of Cinematographers, Johnson composes frames with an eye to the emotive, tactile and thematic. She also shares her enthusiasm and knowledge for image-making in the Department of Cinema and Media Arts at York University, where she is an Assistant Professor in Film Production.
Her recent documentary ‘Celestial Queer: The Life, Work and Wonder of James MacSwain’ is currently in its festival run, and won both the Best Atlantic Documentary award at Atlantic International Film Festival, and Best Feature Documentary at Silver Wave. Her work has been shown on major networks and streaming platforms such as Netflix, Peacock, CBC and Al Jazeera, as well as festivals such as Toronto International Film Festival, Inside Out, San Francisco Doc Fest, and Image+Nation.
Eryn Foster is a multidisciplinary artist and filmmaker based in K’jipuktuk/Halifax. Over the past two decades she has presented her work at numerous artist-run centres, public galleries and museums as well as ongoing exhibitions at Hermes Gallery (in Halifax) where she is a member of the collective. Her first foray into filmmaking was the fully improvised comedic drama Here Kitty Kitty (2005,) an award winning low-budget indie feature she co-created with the Argentine director Santiago Giralt. She has since been focused on making art-inspired documentaries including Celestial Queer: The Life, Work and Wonder of James MacSwain. Produced and directed in collaboration with Sue Johnson, this film has gone on to win several awards including the Best Atlantic Documentary (Atlantic International Film Festival, 2023) and Best Feature Documentary (Silverwave Film Festival, 2024). Thanks to support from the Canada Council for the Arts and Arts NS, Celestial Queer is currently on tour and traveling to 15+ big city and small town venues across Canada. À parts égales projet artistique, leçon d’histoire et œuvre fantaisiste, Celestial Queer: The Life, Work, and Wonder of James MacSwain propose le portrait d’un artiste qui a défié les conventions afin de vivre selon ses propres termes. Les réalisatrices Eryn Foster et Sue Johnson ont passé une décennie à suivre l’évolution de l’esprit vif et érudit de MacSwain, alors qu’il menait sa vie dans le nord d’Halifax, qu’il retournait dans sa petite ville natale rurale d’Amherst, en Nouvelle-Écosse — où il a grandi dans les années 1950 sans jamais pouvoir se conformer aux attentes hétérosexuelles — et qu’il évoquait sa pratique artistique foisonnante et inventive développée tout au long de sa vie.

Johnson et Foster, qui ont connu MacSwain pendant plusieurs décennies jusqu’à sa mort en 2025, combinent une multitude de formats dans cette production (notamment le 16 mm, le Super 8 et la vidéo numérique) pour créer une célébration intime en forme de mosaïque, à l’image de l’œuvre même de leur sujet.
Celestial Queer s’impose désormais comme une élégie dédiée à un homme profondément original, reconnu à l’échelle internationale et devenu une figure emblématique de l’intégrité artistique. James MacSwain a vécu selon ses propres règles — sans gêne, sans compromis et de manière inoubliable.
Sue Johnson
Sue Johnson est une réalisatrice et directrice de la photographie établie à Toronto, qui travaille principalement dans le domaine du cinéma narratif et documentaire de long métrage. Membre de l’I.A.T.S.E. 667 et de la Société canadienne des directeurs de la photographie, Johnson compose ses images avec une attention particulière portée à l’émotion, à la matérialité et aux dimensions thématiques. Elle partage également son enthousiasme et son expertise en création d’images au Département de cinéma et d’arts médiatiques de l’Université York, où elle est professeure adjointe en production cinématographique.
Son récent documentaire, Celestial Queer: The Life, Work and Wonder of James MacSwain, est actuellement présenté dans le cadre de son parcours en festivals. Le film a remporté le prix du meilleur documentaire atlantique au Atlantic International Film Festival ainsi que celui du meilleur long métrage documentaire au Silver Wave Film Festival. Eryn Foster
Eryn Foster est une artiste multidisciplinaire et cinéaste établie à K’jipuktuk/Halifax.
