A casual celebration of staff, artists and festival patrons to kick off the start of the 2022 festival. Come have food and drink with us as we socialize and reconnect after 2 years of COVID19 restrictions have forced cancellations and digital-only events. The restaurant will be open and we will be enjoying ourselves on the patio.

Pop Up Performance.
“Pop Up Performances” As part of the Fabulous Festival of Fringe Film’s 2022 program, several performance artists will be attending and engaging the local area of downtown Durham. Check with festival organizers or watch for updates on our website to see these pop-up events and participate in festival activations with us.
Friday July 15
11am -4pm > Collective phytography workshop, Phil Hoffman & Cole Forrest, Durham Community Centre and Arena, 451 Saddler St W, Durham
Working with celluloid film, this workshop allows you to engage in collective art creation processes specifically using found plant and flower materials in the downtown area. Through a process called Phytography, materials are used to imprint directly onto the film creating a performative montage effect where all participants collaborate to create a single art film together that represents the region and the action of working together. Registration required. Cost $20 or free with festival pass.

10am -4pm > Vintage Poster Print Workshop, The Colour Jar – 120 Garafraxa St N, Durham
Combine your love of film with printing an actual vintage-style poster! Join printmaker Timothy Dyck to roll out the ink and “pull your first proof” on a classic film-fest souvenir! A short process, 15 minutes, but you can also volunteer to sort metal type if you are really into it! Free! All Welcome!

1pm > Free Wrestling Event, Durham Community Centre and Arena – 451 Saddler St W, Durham,
Northland Wrestling is presenting a full-card of wrestling matches for the benefit of the Fabulous Festival of Fringe Film. We have collectively decided to do this event completely for free with all welcome. As a fundraiser, soda, water, pizza and popcorn will be sold on-site with proceeds going to the festival’s overhead expenses. Come see high-flying, hard hitting wrestling action with some of Canada’s brightest wrestling stars. Donations will be accepted at the door. All welcome, no purchase necessary to attend.

1pm-4pm > Hand-sewn Book-making Workshop, The Colour Jar – 120 Garafraxa St N, Durham,
Learn the basic elements of traditional bookbinding to create a beautiful and functional journal for writing and sketching. Binder Timothy Dyck will take you through the steps of folding, sewing and creating an open-spine hardcover. A 3-hour workshop. Registration required. Cost $20 or free with festival pass.

1pm-4pm > Collaborative Filmmaking, Durham Conservation Area – 323198 Durham Road East, R.R.# 1, Durham
Working with FabFilmFest Artistic Director, Clayton Windatt a collective of artists will shoot a short Super8 film together building collective actions through consensus building. This half-day will be spent building, performing and shooting a 5 minute self-contained short film. Registration required. Cost is “pay-what-you-can” with a suggested donation of $5 or free with festival pass.
